Day Cruise is a funk and rap duo based out of Louisville, KY. They lay down some pretty funky and smooth music while performing with a fun, light energy. I met them personally through shows and was later asked to create a cover for their upcoming single and an accompanying Spotify canvas video. I was very excited for this project once I heard this single because almost like a case of synesthesia (which I do not have, it's just the best description) I had immediate colors and imagery come to mind. I can only describe it as "plastic toy boat and rubber ducky" energy. This particular song was slower and very groovy and it reminded me of a rounded waterfall slowly dripping down. I created exactly that for the background and some sharper, bold typography that fit the vibe. The color palette came from the "plastic toy boat and rubber ducky" and is a nice cool wave of blues with the pop of yellow. I then started adding depth to the waterfall with shadows and added a thick paper texture to make it look like a 3D paper cutout.
I created a simple banner in this style as well to promote the single on their social media. I wanted to showcase the nice, crisp paper cutout theme that I had decided on. Spotify Canvas videos are only seven seconds long; I wanted to create simple dream-like visuals that seemed like you were entering the song. I created a door shape opening with part of the paper waterfall behind it then made the waterfall start to drip and ripple like water as the clip goes on. Of course I had to include the rubber duckies floating by to add to this dream-like state. The visual were light, fun, kind of funky, and exactly what I saw when I listened to the song. The band loved the art and welcomed the theme of the designs.
