Friday After 5 has been a staple of Owensboro, KY and the tristate area for 26 years. It is a summer-long, free, family-friendly concert and street fair festival that takes place on Owensboro's riverfront every Friday of the summer. There is food, vendors, and music on almost every corner of the event. It draws in over 50,000 people each season and is considered to be the best way to start your weekend around town. The riverfront itself has seen major expansion and renovation in the past decade which has only boosted the popularity of the event. One of these major expansions has been the addition of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame & Museum in 2018. In early 2022 before the Fa5 season kicked off, the committee decided to move the whole event west by roughly three blocks in order to have the museum and the Owensboro convention center be the centers off attention and music for the event. I was hired to create a planimetric style graphic map showcasing the new area of the event. This was done to help avoid any confusion around the slight movement of the event and to help with general accessibility.
I started by looking over various maps of the area to get a good sense of the layout. I then went into Illustrator and started shaping out areas and buildings. It's important in this type of layout to simplify unnecessary details in order to display relevant information more efficiently. While the streets aren't perfectly aligned to the true cardinal points in real life, I set the layout up on a grid for this ease of use. Next I created a color coded key system to effectively guide people in the right direction and clearly state the location of every detail pertaining to the event. This design was used on the events website and various physical spots to help guide attendees and was met with good reception.
